They finally brought Dalton down

Sadly, there are no pictures.

Seriously, chud? Too obvious.

Science!

“Money Only Makes You Happy If It Makes You Richer Than Your Neighbors”

While it’s tempting to just laugh this off as another awesome Science Daily headline, this has important policy and political implications. Redistribution of wealth shouldn’t lead to increased happiness on its own, so those of us who think eroding income inequality is important need to make sure we improve lives beyond simply shifting money around – if we want our changes to be sustainable, that is. Improving healthcare access, and thus health outcomes, seems like a good, smart step (though it’s also technically a redistribution of income). What else? Better access to leisure time? Education? Drug legalization?

I don’t love the name…

…but I do love the concept. Go tell Rob McKenna what’s what.

Re: Vandalism and threats in the wake of healthcare reform

Those who are the targets of the terroristic, anti-democratic backlash against HCR should not be seen as victims but as heroes – patriots – who stood up for what they believed in the face of hysterical ignorance. While I sure as hell hope that nobody is actually hurt, I also hope that if anyone is inured or killed, we deify them overnight and use their name to ensure a better future. It sucks that the left has a monopoly on martyrdom, but that’s the way the game has been played for decades – we’ve got the hope, they’ve got the fear.

Sorry for the extreme earnestness. I had a rare, perfect snarkless moment that I needed to share.

“Old tenants recently moved, never to return…”

Feeling nostalgic for a time when men and elves coexisted? Why not move into The Lothlorien Apartments, conveniently located on University Way NE? “The Lothlorien Apartments are home to U of W faculty and staff, professionals and a limited number of (primarily graduate) students.”*

I’d add a picture, but you couldn’t handle the disappointment. Elven architecture has degenerated considerably since the last age.

* How do they enforce this? There’s no way this is UW housing, and while undergrads aren’t exactly a protected class, this seems weird. Maybe they price them out?

Vote Tuesday 3/16 at Downtown Library

Sometimes a few votes can make a big difference – a little-known election takes place in two weeks, and the only Seattle polling place is the main branch of the library (1000 Fourth Ave), hours from 10:30-7:30. The King Conservation District Board of Supervisors manage a biggish budget overseeing restoration and other projects, and is targeted by conservative activists hoping to keep the board friendly to developers. There were only 2,500 votes last year, so you can make a big difference. Max Prinsen is the green choice. Bring a friend!

If you don’t live in Seattle, check out these alternate polling places.
